Can I smoke or have outdoor Fires? This is a NO Smoking property and outdoor fires of any kind are prohibited. Please be careful with other forms of fire including the use of candles, gas grilles, as well as making sure the screen is always closed on wood stoves and fireplaces (as our cottages are built from wood and we are surrounded by trees). Fire danger on MT. Desert Island is often high in the summer and the nearest fire station is three and half miles away and staffed by volunteers. The eastern half of Mount Desert Island was ravaged in 1947 by an accidental fire spread by the wind. It was a lesson o how susceptible this particular environment is to nature's destructive forces.
